Privacy policy
This policy covers Restore Old Photos for Mac and for Windows (the "app") and this website, restoreoldphotosapp.com. It is written to describe how they actually behave. The app and the website are made by A17Lab, listed as InnoBee on the App Store and the Microsoft Store.
The short version. On Mac and Windows your photos are restored on your own computer and are never uploaded to us or anyone else. There is no account and no login.
The app connects to the internet for three things only: downloading the AI models on first use, sending an anonymous "a photo was restored" counter, and sending the feedback form if you choose to write to us.
1. Your photos stay on your computer
Every feature (Restore, Clean up, Colorize and Upscale) runs locally: with Apple's Core ML on Mac, and with ONNX Runtime and your graphics card on Windows. No photo you open, restore or export is sent off your device. No image is uploaded, copied to a server, stored in a cloud, used to train a model or seen by a person.
The app only reads the files you open, paste or drag onto its window, and only writes the files you export. On Mac it runs inside the macOS App Sandbox and cannot see your Photos library or the rest of your disk.
2. What the app sends over the internet
2.1 One-time AI model downloads
The AI models are not bundled with the app. The first time you use a feature that needs one, the app downloads it from a public GitHub release (github.com/nguyen-tam/aiimageupscale): about 420 MB for Colorize and about 30 MB for each of the others. The request carries no photo, no personal data and no identifier from us. GitHub may log it under the GitHub privacy statement. Downloaded models are kept on your computer and reused offline.
2.2 Anonymous usage counter
After a photo is processed successfully, the app sends one small event to our server at a17lab.com so we can see how often each feature is used. It contains no photo and no personal information, and is dropped silently if it fails.
| Field | What it contains |
|---|---|
device_id | A random identifier the app creates on first launch. It is not your Apple Account, Microsoft account, serial number, computer name or an advertising identifier, and it is not linked to your identity. |
event | Which action ran: restore, colorize, denoise (Clean up) or upscale. |
client_version | The app version, for example 1.0.0. |
platform | mac or windows. |
daily_count | How many photos this install has processed in total. |
timestamp | The date and time of the event, in UTC. |
We use this only to understand overall feature use. It is not used for advertising, not sold and not shared. The app contains no advertising or third-party analytics SDK and does not track you across other apps or websites.
2.3 The feedback form
If you open the feedback form in the app and send it, we receive the email address, message and suggestions you typed, plus the platform (mac or windows). We use them only to read your feedback and reply. The app never sends this form on its own.
2.4 Purchases
Pro is sold through the Mac App Store or the Microsoft Store. Payment happens inside Apple's or Microsoft's system, and we never see your name, email address or payment details. The app only asks the store whether your account owns Pro and keeps the yes or no answer on your computer. See the Apple Privacy Policy and the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
3. What is stored on your computer
The app keeps a little information in its own storage. None of it is sent to us except as described in section 2, and it is removed when you uninstall the app.
- The random device identifier described above.
- Whether Pro is active and which plan, and how many free runs you have used.
- How many photos you have processed, used for the usage counter and to ask for a rating once.
- On Mac, bookmarks to recently opened files so Open Recent works.
- The downloaded AI model files.
4. What we never collect
- Your photos or any part of them, including thumbnails, previews and metadata.
- Your name, address or phone number, or your email address unless you type it into the feedback form.
- Your location, contacts, Photos library, or any file you did not open in the app.
- Payment or card details.
- Advertising identifiers or cross-app and cross-site tracking data.
5. This website
restoreoldphotosapp.com sets no cookies and has no analytics, advertising or tracking scripts. Fonts and images are served from this site. Like any web server, our hosting provider (Hostinger) and network provider (Cloudflare) process your IP address and the pages you request to deliver the site and protect it from abuse, under their own privacy policies.
6. iPhone and iPad
The same App Store app also runs on iPhone and iPad, where it works differently: Restore runs on our secure server, and the photo is deleted as soon as the result comes back. Colorize and Upscale run on the device. The iPhone and iPad version is covered by its own privacy policy.
7. Retention and your rights
Usage events are kept in aggregate for as long as they are useful for product decisions. Feedback is kept as long as needed to handle your request. Everything else stays on your computer, under your control.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal data we hold about you. The only data we hold that can be linked to you as a person is what you type into the feedback form. Email us and we will delete it. We do not sell or share personal information and do not use it for targeted advertising.
You can stop all outbound traffic from the app by blocking its network access or uninstalling it. With the models already downloaded, it keeps restoring photos offline.
8. Children
The app is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
9. Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
